THE SPREAD OF ISLAM IN SURABAYA

In Surabaya, there was a very important figure in spreading Islam and one of the members of Walisongo. He was known as Sunan Ampel. Sunan Ampel came from the Kingdom of Champa in the city of Phan Thiet, Vietnam. Sunan Ampel's life made Ampeldenta the first center of Islamic education in Java, influenced by the teachings of Maulana Malik Ibrahim. Sunan Ampel is considered the architect of the establishment of the Demak Sultanate in 1477. After the collapse of the Majapahit Kingdom in 1526, Hindu-Buddhist influence weakened, prompting the Demak Sultanate to focus more on spreading Islam. In 1546, Surabaya was under the control of the Demak Sultanate, but the Demak Sultanate needed to grant autonomy for Surabaya's future. Surabaya became a major city with an administrative system under the Principality (Prinsdom of Soerabaja) or Kadipaten Surabaya, led by an Adipati.
